The closing concert of the Orchestre de chambre I Musici de Montréal’s 2012-2013 season takes place at the Maison symphonique on May 24, 2013, under the direction of Jean-Marie Zeitouni. A bona fide French-style Choral Celebration, the program will feature works by Ravel, Fauré, Debussy, Canteloube, Chausson and Duruflé.
Maurice Durufle’s superb Requiem follows the example set by Fauré, albeit with a few differences, including the use of Gregorian melodies and a slightly more modern compositional style. Around this work, we’ll hear three rare choral works by Debussy based on texts from the 15th century, coupled with the original version of Faure’s Pavane and Ravel’s Spanish-inspired final score. With mezzo-soprano Julie Boulianne, baritone Phillip Addis and the Studio de musique ancienne de Montréal Choir. A timeless evening!

Conductor in residence Jean-Michel Malouf will direct the orchestra’s musicians as they offer a program made up of works by Janacek, Suk and Dvorak.

Since Smetana’s time, the heirs to the Czech school of music have sought inspiration in a rich trove of local folklore. Their style reflects the sheer intensity of the dance rhythms together with the warmth of popular Czech songs. This program will also feature Dvorak’s American Quartet, which was among his final works, inspired by the composer’s stay in the United States.

Jean-Michel Malouf is a graduate of the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal in orchestra conducting, trombone and chamber music. He takes part in I Musici de Montréal’s 2012-2013 season as conductor in residence. Pleased to extend his partnership with the I Musici for the next season, Jean-Michel Malouf appreciates the position’s significant contribution to his professional development and the unique opportunity it has given him to become familiar with the inner workings of an orchestra made up of first-rate musicians. Integrated into the organization’s various spheres of activity, the conductor in residence is involved in both artistic and administrative projects. During the course of the season, Mr. Malouf will direct two concerts in the Ogilvy Series (among others).

Since the very first edition, dedicated to voice, in 2002, nearly 2,000 candidates have applied to take part in the various editions, and, of these, more than 300 were given the opportunity to perform in Montreal, to the great delight of music lovers.

I Musici de Montréal inaugurates the Ogilvy series with a splendid selection of musical gems from the baroque period. In the more than capable hands of singers Pascale Beaudin and Claudine Ledoux, the arias of Purcell, Vivaldi, Bach and Pergolesi deploy the full breadth of their richness and virtuosity. The program will also feature Battalia, a daring musical depiction of battle by Biber.
