YULI TUROVSKY 1939-2013
FOUNDER AND ARTISTIC DIRECTOR EMERITUS
OF I MUSICI DE MONTRÉAL
Yuli Turovsky came in Canada in 1977 with $50 in his pocket; but he also brought an incredible musical track record and the imperishable dream of forming a chamber orchestra. His ambition and passion became a reality when he founded I Musici de Montréal in 1983. In his 27 years at the helm of I Musici, Yuli was able to foster a sixth sense with his musicians, enabling them to achieve a rare musical synergy and to develop the ensemble’s trademark sound. Yuli believed in each and every one of his protégés, pushing them to fulfil their musical dreams and to intensely experience each note on every score. If it’s true that behind every great man there is a great woman, then Yuli, for his part, had two great women behind him: his wife Ella and their daughter Natasha. Both served as violinists with I Musici for 27 years. The Turovsky family remains a symbol of incomparable strength, determination, energy and cohesion.
Yuli and Ella Turovsky are no longer with us, unfortunately; but they left behind an orchestra whose members are imbued with the same sincerity and desire to share their passion for music at each concert, as though the life of every musician depended on it – as though this was their final chance to play. Thank you, Yuli.
